I have 20 chicks less than a week old, doing well in a very large box brooder with hardware cloth on top. They have plenty of space, but I know not for long.
I'm figuring out how I want to set up the next size brooder and need to do it quickly. I was going to combine 2 large boxes, and still might because I like the idea of it being collapsible/portable so it's not taking up space for a year until we do this again, but it would also be nice to have a brooder up off the ground, or one with a easier different type of lid/opening.

If I make/build 2 separate brooders, will it be hard to get those chicks to be together later? My chicks already have clear dominant ones that are bigger and feisty, and the other several low on the pecking order.

You can avoid integration issues by brooding them all together.
So long as your boxes/brooder isn't too big for you to be able to deal with the chicks, and you have the space for it then go that route.

So long as you have a week or so letting both groups see each other but not touch (through hardware cloth or something) then you shouldn't have any really big issues merging the groups, especially around 6-8 weeks.
