Hello! Just popping by to introduce myself.
I'm getting ready to move out of a rental home and into a home we own come spring, and we've decided to get chickens when we do! So my SO and I wanted to join up here to learn and get ready.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've had chickens before--years ago with my parents, we had a small laying flock of 4. But my SO has never had them before.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
0, sadly. We rent right now.
(3) What breeds do you have?
None, though we're trying to decide between Plymouth rocks, silkies, ameraucana, polish, and wyandottes.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
They're so fun to watch doing their chicken things! I used to love watching them find a bug to chase. We're also all about getting some healthy eggs!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Fish keeping and woodworking!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have a dog named Beeves Wellington. She's a rough coated collie who spends her days turning food into fur at such a high efficiency we suspect she might be a perpetual motion machine. 1lb of food surely turns into 1lb of fur. We love her though!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I lurked on BYC for years when I had chickens several years ago! We joined up because when we move, we want to get some chicks and would much prefer to buy chicks from hobbyists who love their birds rather than from a faceless hatchery. No offense to big hatcheries of course, it's just our preference. BYC seems to be a great community and a wonderful group of people to buy healthy chicks from.
We also want to lurk in all the coop building forums to look at your gorgeous coops and borrow some building ideas! Chicken Palace incoming!
Look forward to interacting with everyone!
