Hello! New in Brighton, Colorado

Hello I'm a former Brightonian ? here. We lived in Lochbuie for 12 years . We moved back to hubby's hometown in Nebraska and got our backyard flock of 5 in 2020. I love them , you will too. I know Denver allows 3 hens so Brighton should too. We built our coop hidden from plain site so we wish you luck with that. Hens do make some noise after laying so how are your neighbors? There are a lot of good layer breeds that are friendly. Look for cold hardy breeds and start with a study coop not one of the "pre fab" cheap ones. Best of luck and thank you for your service. God bless you and your family
Hi! Thank you for your support, and for your suggestions!

I'm definitely looking to make my own coop, lower than fence level (HOA states "anything plainly visible from the street needs permission" and also explicitly states "no chickens" so I want to definitely get that changed.) I'm thinking if I survey/get signatures from my neighbors in support of "Chickens but no roosters" that would be a good thing to take to the HOA? There are a couple neighbors on the HOA, so that is a good start. I know my 2 next door neighbors are cool. Not so sure about behind us...but I'm 100% willing to bribe with eggs ;) LOL

My mom is from Nebraska--SW corner.

We built our coop right under the fence line but I'm only 5 ft.tall.! So that made it easy, everyone else hates it!
I would hope the price of eggs right now might give you some bonus points with neighbors. I would use that angle. Not having roosters usually makes the difference. Good luck on that.
There are a lot of coop ideas in the article section on this forum.
We backed up our coop to our fence pic attached. Made out of mostly scrap lumber.
This is a great place to learn all there is to know about chickens.

This is wonderful! Looks great. Thank you so much. How many chickens do you have?

Hello Colorado!

I'm new to researching backyard chickens, but I am REALLY ready to do it (my HOA be damned lol).

Is there anyone in Brighton, CO? I'm not seeing any ordinances here (yet). Has anyone successfully petitioned their HOA to allow hens? I'll keep researching the forums here, but thought I'd pop in and post.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? New to BYC. My kids' school has several in their yard so they're used to them :)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 0, but looking for 4 or more

(3) What breeds do you have? None yet. Want good egg layers/friendly

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Cheap eggs!!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Sports, stock trading, aviation, hanging out with our neighbors

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have cats, 3 kids, and are a military family. I'm ready to be more self sufficient, and have big plans for our backyard garden!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
Welcome, and I wish you well in locating the resources and/or experience in dealing with the HOA issue.
