Luckily our "supervisor" was pleased with the addition and she has taken full advantage of the extra sq. footage

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I've raised both Black Australorps (still have BAs) and Rhode Island Reds and they are both good breeds. The lay rates are very close between the two breeds but my Australorps have been slightly better than my RIRs. Temperament wise the Australorps are considerably better; calm and gentle. My children, and now my granddaughter, made pets of them. I never had an agressive one (I can't say the same about the RIRs). Whatever breed you end up getting, good luck with your flock. Thanks for all the tips and welcomes. I think I am going to look into trying to find some australorps or rhodes island reds near by. I think they will work well for my needs.
Its still in progress, I am about 80% complete. I built something large and am going to use half for storage and half for the girls. I am just hoping to finish up the coop building and get my permits to be ready in the spring. I will post some update photos when I get a minute.
