Hello everyone

I am the proud new owner of a couple of orphaned chickens and came across this site several times while searching for "Chicken 101" info. Looks like a great and very useful site!

I inherited my 2 hens in an odd way - a neighbor's gardener had too many chickens to handle, and asked the neighbor if they wanted a couple of them (they already have a few). They declined, but unfortunately instead of taking them back, the gardener decided to dump the chickens in my horse pasture a couple of days ago. Fortunately they had many bugs to munch on, and in the meantime I ran down to the feed store and bought a coop and some feed. I had been thinking of getting chickens anyway, so it looks like they pretty much fell from the sky! I guess I asked and received.

They seem to be adjusting pretty quickly, but I understand they were raised without much interaction, and kept in a coop at all times. They do seem to enjoy wandering the pasture now though

And they are getting more comfortable coming closer and even eating treats from my hand.

So, long story short... I'm a total newbie! Glad to have found what seems to be a great community here.

Best,
Adri

Welcome to Back Yard Chickens! I'm warning you though, it is terribly addictive!!! I never dreamed a blog could be so informative, fun, uplifting, and yes - addictive! Don't get discouraged on the learning curve here. It can be a little over-whelming!

Forgot to mention - we're pretty sure the chickens are a Barred Rock and a Rhode Island Red - we named em Mc and Nugget!
