Hello new member from Nova Scotia with mixed flock of chickens . I have 4 pullets that were 6 months old when I got them- they are now 10 months and still no eggs??? Why- I have a black copper maran Roo as well as 2 Silkies’s Roos who seem to get along?
Nice to have you here!
Usually chickens/pullets lay their first winter. Are they free ranging? Any place they can go and have a dark quiet corner to secretly lay their eggs? Happened to me one summer….. egg production was down but everyone was healthy and acting normal. And then I noticed the smell of rotten eggs by my back porch. A few of the ladies found a little opening under the steps and had a big stash of eggs in there. What a mess to clean and put boards up
Some other issues can be health, some nutrition related. But some breeds are known to mature later and may not start laying until 8-10 months. Are their combs and wattles bright red? Are they checking out nesting boxes? Do they squat if you bend down to pet them? Any chance you have critters stealing eggs? Last summer I had a mama skunk under the coop floor and she managed to create an opening in the (old) wooden floor that was not visible to me. She had two babies and I caught them a few times eating eggs. They didn’t bother the chickens and didn’t spray so I let them be until the babies were a good size. Then everything was sealed off and the floor is no longer wooden.
Hello, welcome to BYC, do you have artifical lighting on them? This time of the year they need it as there is not enough hours of light in a day to support egg production. 14-16 hours is sufficient to enable egg production.
Welcome. Were they laying when they came to you? I believe from what you wrote, they were not. In this case, it is most likely an underlying health issue.
