Henhouse Harlot
Crowing
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
-When I was 2 years old, my mother brought home some retired egg-factory chickens. They were so happy to be out of that place, I could do anything with them!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
-Honest answer? Our original "off-grid raised chicks*" flock of 6 assorted hens and 1 Silver-laced Wyandotte rooster, plus about 39 (we think..), new peeps.
*I don't recommend it, although it worked well, it's extremely time-consuming! I would fill the biggest Mason jars to the brim with boiling water. After making sure the lids were on tight, I wrapped each jar in newspaper and rags before placing them around one end of the brooder. I used about 5-6 jars, arranged in a pattern, with a piece of cardboard and more rags on top. (To hold in heat!)
If the power goes out, don't panick!
Boil water!
Make tea!

(3) What breeds do you have?
-2 Easter Eggers, Plymouth Barred Rock, New Hampshire Red, Sapphire Gem, Silver-laced wyandotte and a mostly white hen of questionable heritage...
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
-Everything!!! Except for opening the coop first thing every morning, maybe.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
-Horses, reading amazing things, being a bit of a know-it-all, self-improvement (really!), art if all kinds, cooking & baking, gardening, Shibari (ancient rope art), being in the forest, playing in a creek, catching reptiles...lots more.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a Mama of one incredible little person, he is a blessing. I'm in love with a little black stallion, I think he just likes me for my treats though. My partner is a Gardener Extrordinaire.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
-I want to learn as much as possible about chickens! BYC kept popping up in my searches. You've got fantastic posts!!!
