Hi all! I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been lurking here for the past few weeks since I got my chicks and love all the great advice and inspiration I find. We have 2 Americaunas (George and Gracie) who are 4 weeks old today, 1 Buff Orpington (Delta Dawn) and 1 White Leghorn (Foghorn or Foggy for short - I live on the coast!) who are both 5 weeks old. Hopefully they will all be female despite two masculine names.

We've talked about raising chickens for a few years and finally decided to just do it! My DH is hard at work building the coop and run. He finished framing it last weekend and will be putting the roof on this weekend. We would never have been able to design a coop without all the great advice and pictures we've found on this site. I can't wait to post pictures of our coop and the process when we're done! We're looking forward to many years with our new pets and of course fresh eggs!

Our two Golden Retrievers are very interested in the girls and one has become their new protector. She spends a lot of time watching them in their brooding pen and runs to their side if one squawks too loud to make sure they're okay. We call it "Chick TV" when she watches them forever. Don't worry, there is a fence in the garage separating her from the chicks, and the chick brooding pen is about 3 feet from the fence. She also spends most of her day laying next to the fence so she can be near the babies in case they need her. We think she wants to protect the chickies, but who knows with a "bird" dog! So we keep her away, but she can look.

I'm just happy to join this fabulous group and hope I can contribute. Thanks for such a great site!

from NH. We have Chicken TV at our house, too. Each evening we let all the birds out to free-range in our yard while the family sits and watches them. It is a spectacular sight to have all 30 of our birds (ducks, chickens and a goose) just wandering around doing their thing. A great way to unwind after a long day of work.
