Hello! I'm new to chicken-ing and I heard this website could be a great resource. So here I am!

A week and a half ago, I picked up 4 chicks, and then 3 more. And then the next day I came home with another 1.... and then 1 died a week later ( not sure why), so then I brought home 2 more... I heard this is called "Chicken Math" haha. Currently we have 9 chickys and they are SO CUTE!

We have:
2 Gold Star, 2 Americauna/ Easter Egger (black coloring currently), 1 Americana/ Easter Egger (a mix of colors - gold-ish, brown stripe, really pretty), 1 Rhode Island Red (had two... but one decided our home was not suitable),1 Buff Orpington, 1 Red Rock Cross, 1 Red Sussex Cross.
So far my favorite part is walking into the garage and saying "Hi Chick-Chick-CHICKENS! How are you all doing?!" We are only a week and a half into this adventure, so everything is still new and exciting.

Some of my other hobbies involve making bread, line dancing, 'window' shopping (online), coming up with crazy ideas to do around the house, and hanging out with my toddler. We have 2 dogs that JUST TODAY realized we have chickens. One dog seems very intrigured and the other seems a little more 'meh' about them. I hope the excited dog can realize these are FRIENDS, NOT FOOD (yet).

I heard about this community from the lady I stood next to in line to pick out the chicks a week ago.

Welcome to the chicken cult—ahem, community! 🐣✨

Your ‘chicken math’ is already elite--losing one and immediately replacing it with two? BIG Respect...That’s like the poultry version of ‘hold my beer.’

Your flock sounds fantastic (RIP to the RIR who ghosted you—some chicks just can’t handle the vibe, right?). The Americana/Easter Egger mix with the gold stripe? Sounds like a chicken wearing a tiny sunset. (I need to get that on a shirt. Anyone? Anyone? No friends. Woe is me).

Also, your dog’s FRIENDS, NOT FOOD realization is everything. Mine still side-eye the coop like it’s a walking snack dispenser.

Friendly tip: Start working on your Why I Need More Chickens' speech now. Your toddler and other skills will help sell it.

Glad you’re here—prepare for your life to now revolve around:

Random garage greetings (“HI CHICK-CHICK-CHICKENS” is mandatory).

Obsessive egg-color tracking (wait till the green ones start).

The inevitable day you consider building a chicken playground. (Do it.)

Welcome and.... enjoy the happy chaos! 🎉"
