For anyone watching this thread still, I got three chicks today! They're Ameraucanas (so easter eggers haha) and they're in their brooder on my kitchen counter out of reach of the kids.

The new development is that I've also ordered three straight run french black copper Marans for pickup in June, so in 6 months I might have a rooster or two to relocate. Currently being yelled at by the chicks, they like to sit in my hand

Congratulations on the chicks!

Three babies in their cardboard box brooder.

I made them a heat plate with an always-on heating pad and a cooling rack that I bent with some pliers to give it a slope. I covered the heating pad with plastic bags and a pillow case and tied it to the rack with some cotton yarn.

They ate and drank well. Had to remind them where the heat pad was a couple times, but now they've got it figured out. Lots of little dots of poop on the paper towel are encouraging. Hoping I don't have to deal with any pasty butts!

Do chicks pretty much sleep from sundown to sunup?
