I think posting on the "Canadians, check in here." thread will provide you withe the best information for your locale. They can tell how how they get their birds through severe weather, what type of coop is best, what breeds can handle the climate. Also best feed stores, and so on.

I do know the Chanticleer breed of chicken originated in Canada to handle the weather extremes. They have very flat combs they are not prone to frostbite like straight combed breeds.
