Glad you joined us.

Last winter someone in Alaska started a thread called "Think it's too cold for your chickens?" I learned that chickens can survive subzero temperatures without supplemental heat as long as certain other conditions exist. They are heartier that you might think!

Although I live in eastern North Carolina, my first 16-week old pullets came to me on a flat-bed truck from Conneticut (along with their coop)! Pick a cold-tolerant variety & they'll do fine. Many are much more cold-tolerant than heat-tolerant. I've heard the smaller-comb varieties are better for colder climates (so combs don't get frost-bitten). Chickens make wonderful pets! Welcome!

I hope you enjoy your new venture. You may want to consider getting chicks in groups of three. If you loose one (which I hope you don't) , you won't have to worry about a lonely chick.
