Hey everyone! Just wanted to post a hello since I just signed up. Already got lots of new information and just wanted to be able to make posts of my own.

I somewhat recently moved from a small house on almost no land in southern Canada and from the money was able to buy 160 acres up in northern Canada.

No real farming plans or anything commercial just always loved having chickens and horses and land as a kid and thanks to some good younger decisions me and the wife were able to have our dream property in our mid 30s. Sure the house is run down and we have to haul our own water but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

So recently we started getting chickens for laying and for fun and we begun with a grown group of Bantam Cochins.

We knew they wouldn't be great layers and would often go broody but they were pretty and thought it would be fun to dip our toes in.

They have been so much fun. Lots of tiny eggs though of the 3 hens 1-2 always seem broody. We eventually decided screw it and marked and left in eggs under the broody hen. 3 weeks later 3 little peepers popped out. We kept them separate for a couple weeks and after some slow reintegration they are all living together just fine.

Near the same time we bought 5 sexed buff Orpington pullets. They are about 13 weeks old now and running around the yard like a pack of little raptors.

Eventually what we would like is to get a buff Orpington rooster and barred rock hens and produce a bunch of sex links to make our future a bit easy.

Anyways that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Glad to meet everyone and look forward to posting and talking more.

hello and welcome to BYC.. i grew up in southern Canada myself.. but now living the dream in the woods of upstate N.Y. and having my hens is a little bit of a dream come true.. your babies are gorgeous.. 160 acres? ah, envious.. :)

Ya it is nice how cheap land is up here.

We were able to sell our kelowna house and thanks to the luck of the market have $80k in equity. So we took that and paid $250k for 160 acres here. Traded up I'd say!

Right now we are sitting around the fire with a drink and being glad we did it!

oh, i would say that is trading up.. and what a life.. i wouldnt trade my 6 acres of woods for anything in the world.. sitting around the fire.. ah, life doesnt get better than that, tho lately my hens have taken to hiding eggs in the firepit.. guess they'll be sad when we set it ablaze..
did you say you had horses as well?

Not yet one day. The wife is the big horse enthusiast really. We currently have a single dexter cow and a donkey that are pals. We fenced off a couple acres for them to wander around and hang out in.

We got the donkey first basically as a pet and maybe some driving or logging with him for fun. But he was lonely and the neighbor had a rogue cow so thought they would be good friends and it worked out really well.

There is a Fjord cross mule foal coming next fall for the wife to start breaking then riding.

Just the gruesome twosome for now though.
