Hi! I got my first 3 quail about a week ago.

The guy I got them from told me he was reasonably sure, but not entirely sure, they were all female.

I think one might be a male though?

That's him/her in the middle. I don't have a front-on picture yet, but this bird I found on Google looks very similar although it has slightly more spots than mine:

He/she is also bigger, pushier and noisier than the other 2 although I haven't heard any definitive crowing yet.

So is my bird [which the kids named Gwendolyn...] a male, do you think?

Thanks for your help!

The bird appears to be a male Golden, but I would be interested in seeing other thoughts on the matter as well. From what I read, the female Goldens tend to have more spots on their chest, like the bird in the second picture.

I visited the following site to try and get a better picture of what the hens look like verses the males. Perhaps it will be of some use:

That only applies to the other golden color phases not manchurian hens. Manchurian hens can have as little spotting as the bird in the pic or sometimes less. Manchurian roos unless theyve been crossed heavily will always have a dark brown head. The bird in the pic should be a hen, id be very surprised if it wasnt.

Ah, that's right... Your explanation makes sense; the bird is most likely a hen.
