Hello! Introducing myself: I just joined after several weeks of using this site to prepare for our new little flock of yard birds in the suburbs of Dallas, TX.
My aunt had chickens, my stepmother grew up with chickens, my brother has chickens, and so do some of our best friends. This is our first time. We feel pressured to prepare for more self-sufficiency the way the world is turning closer to the Great Depression.
I bought 6 eggs (brown & white) to hatch from our "egg lady" up the road, and kept the incubator on my office desk, but only 3 hatched. My husband picked up two more pullets from the feed store, a tan stripey English Orpington and grey Olive egger. They are a fairly peaceful 2-week-old flock of 5 in a giant rubbermaid container in our breakfast nook. We're building a coop in our small back yard.l, fencing off my container garden.
Hoping to find a few acres this year to build a barndominium.
