Hello there!

Welcome! I like my walk in coop, ease of cleaning out completely .... not 29 anymore  . If you don’t get more than 6 chooks the run may be okay. Add some logs or branches to roost on in the run, keeps them entertained. My run is on the small side but most days the girls can run loose in the fenced in backyard. Works well but if they wouldn’t have that option I’d add on to the run....

Yeah i officially cannot let them out of the run as ruled by the city. That would require 6ft fences on all sides of my property. I have 4 ft fences on 3 sides.

I do intend to put swings and an old stump i have. As well as a couple roosts in the run.

Which is more of a necessity keeping it as a walk in for ease of cleaning or raising the 5x8 coop section 2 feet up to increase the run under the coop.

Whether you have a walk in coop or a raised one is more of a personal preference. I've had both and like the walk in better, but if having a raised coop gives you 2 more feet of run space, then that's probably your better choice.

Chicken Coops

Hi All. I have been on the forums for about 4 months reading. I signed up a month ago to start asking questions. Through research and planning I am looking for some confirmation that when im planning to build matches my needs.

I live in upper Illinois outside Chicago. Very urban city (one of which lets us have fowl). We are only allowed 8 chickens max and no roos. My plan is, i have from march- may to construct my coop. Life got in the way last fall. I placed my order from Meyers Hatchery for May 20th. Our feed store around here only has two order times they offer and its too early i feel to construct my coop. I purchased one of each of the following: Austrolorp, Orpington, Wyndotte, Ameracuana, Brahma, and a random Gift chick the give.

The Coop i plan to build is based on the following:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/the-coop-in-the-woods.73331/
with space constraints in the backyard, i would make a 8x8 structure ( 5x8 for coop, 3x8 for storage) The attached run will be 8x8.

So here are my questions

1) Are there anything I should know about with the breeds I selected socially or physically?

2) Do you see any problems with the space i have allocated for the coop and run. Based on the coop size and suggestions that seems ok. I am concerned with the run space based on the 10 sqft/chicken rule.

Thanks for your advice,tips,and time.
