Hello,
My name is Cait and I'm pretty new to chickens but am loving them. I have 3 and lots of questions! One isn't laying is there anything special I should do?

Nice to meet you Caiti, how old is the one that isn't laying? What breed is she? How long have you had her?. Is there any chance she is a cockerel instead? It's very hard to give opinions when we can't see the bird.

She is a Buff colored Sussex I bought her on Christmas eve. They said she was 12-14wks old she eats like a steamtrain! I'm in Sydney, Australia. I'll try to get a photo of her. Any advice would be great. Do I call you drumstick? They are free range so out all day.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your flock! I used to have just three chickens (have 5 now) and I just loved it! So fun to get to know each of their personalties and bond with each one of them! I have sussex as well!

Your bird may not be laying for many reasons. She might not be receiving the right feed. She might be lacking calcium, water or food in general. Is it cold or extremely hot there? Do they have mites or lice that you can tell? (Check by parting their feathers and looking at the skin.) What about light? Are they getting 12-16 hours of light each day? All of these factors can influence laying.

Here is a good link on egg laying and how to help hens lay

Best of luck to you and welcome to the flock!

Hi :welcome Cait

Glad you could join the flock! Mountain peeps has given you some great advice and a great link to check out. As you are in Australia are you heading into winter now? Egg production in winter can decrease as the day light hours get less.

Good luck with your girls and enjoy BYC :frow

Thanks Everyone, yes we are heading into Winter it's just that she has never laid while the other 2 are kind of regular. I do just love them as pets and am not super worried if she's not a great layer but is it bad for her to not lay?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3 She's also only seven months or so old, and Sussex are sometimes late in starting to lay, especially if you have winter coming on.
