Hello guys! My name is Ana and I'm from Portugal. I can't believe I have never heard of this website before. I've registered a few days ago and I've been lurking around and this is such an awesome little space!

I grew up around chickens. My mom would buy them mainly for the meat, but we always had a trio of hens for the eggs (they all died of old age eventually at around 8 years old). We always called our hens "Maria". So when referring to them we would say, "as 3 Marias" (the 3 Marias), which is kind of an inside joke around my family, since my mom has 3 daughters. So whenever we are all together, me and my sisters always end up in some heated, loud but harmless discussion (you know how it is, siblings...) and one of us always goes, "will you chickens just shut up?" because sometimes we do sound like a bunch of clucking chickens. Even our WhatsApp group name is just 3 chicken icons!

Anyway, something happened in our lives around 10 years ago, so my mom stopped raising chickens. Our house has also gone under some massive transformations, so we have less space now. We still have our large coop, but no chickens for a few years now. :( My mom is itching to get back to raising them and so am I. I miss having some Marias clucking around. Oh and the eggs are good too, I guess. :p

So yeah, once Spring comes around, we'll probably make some renovations to the coop and get some chicks! I admit that in the past my mom didn't really follow the "rules" of raising chickens (more because of unawareness than anything else), so she always had more than she should. The worst part was that she always had a LOT of roosters (for the meat) and just a handful of hens. You can imagine what happened. It was hell. I was a teenager back then though, so this time around, I refuse to let this happen again and I'll be more involved! Which is why I've started researching about raising chickens and I'll make a few posts asking for your help soon.

Hi Ana, it's great to have you here! If you want to have some males for meat, you might think of 2 flocks...1 of just males and 1 of females (for their eggs).

Make yourself at home and always feel free to ask questions, join in conversations, etc.

Thanks for joining us!
