Am Back !!! Joined years ago but have been out for a couple of years now. First stared with 13 laying hens in the back yard - fell in love with chickens !! Then opened a small ranch with 250 laying hens and assorted other animals. Sold the fresh eggs so well that they paid for the fodder of ALL the animals and had more clients than eggs. Lots of work but just loved it. Then the Big C hit and had to sell all my wonderfull animals - - - - which was worse than the Big C !!! Now am feeling better but am reduced to the house and just food shopping ......

... but HAD to get some chickens - - they are sooooo addicting !! So now have 19 hens, one rooster who thinks he is a turkey, 5 cats and 3 dogs here at the house....

Bought four adult hens but turnes out two have scally leg and bumblefeet - --- - did not notice when I bought them because it has been raining and their legs were muddy. Am treating the scally legs and doing good but now need to address the bumblefeet as soon as the mites clear up. Never had any of that in the ranch ......... Happy to be here again - people of like minds --------

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Glad you are feeling better and are able to have a flock again! Good luck with your new birds, hope their feet clear up. not sure if you have seen them, but here are a couple of threads on treating bumblefoot, the first has a lot of pictures on treating it surgically, the other on using Tricide-Neo https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/236649/bumblefoot-surgery-with-pics-and-how-to and https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/303829/vet-suggestion-for-non-invasive-bumblefoot-cure and Poultry Podiatry has a good section on it https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/poultry-podiatry

So glad you could join our community! Good luck with all the health issues within your flock. The scalely leg mites are pretty easy to treat. And so is the bumblefoot if you get all the pus out of the wound AND keep it wrapped and dry until the scab falls off. Usually takes about one month in a bandage if kept dry. No oral antibiotics needed if you catch it early enough before the infection spreads throughout the body.

Enjoy your wonderful flock and welcome to ours!

Welcome to BYC, Sheila. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry you had to see off all your animals, but glad you have been able to get some more chickens. I hope your two hens recover. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens do you have?

Thank you all for the welcome !

I was a rabbit genicist for 10 years, so if you need any help with rabbits I can give you a hand. Wrote a book on backyard rabbit raising for farming folks here in Mexico - I give it away to schools and teachers and sell it in all spanish speaking countries.
my web page is

My flock is really tuttifruti - - here there is no place to buy interesting breeds.
