Greater Cincinnati/NKY
Hello all! This is GrinningRedHead, from Greater Cincinnati-NKY/Ohio. Very excited to be joining this website community and progressing into being a chicken owner before the end of the fall.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am extremely new to chickens, having only been around them twice, held one, fed some and enjoyed waking up to a hungry rooster once. My mother however spoke of them constantly she grew up with chickens

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? zero

(3) What breeds do you have? none

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Google searching breeds about 2 years ago now

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Baking, cooking, container garden, recycling, walking, protesting, herbal medicines, Libertarian Party

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. For years I have been wishing, dreaming, hoping and mildly planning for back yard chickens, bee farming, raising goats and a few other odds and ends. Then I met my amazing husband last Spring and after struggling with a one bedroom apartment for a year and becoming close with a certain friend we are finally moving into a cool opportunity. An Eco-village! A huge 100+ year old home, solid as a rock, deep and healthy .33 acre lot with tones of potential. I am 35 and my hubby is 42, we have a 5-6 month old male kitten - "Paw-Paws", and one gold fish. Currently in between working a job, but helping my husband research and prepare to start gray water reclamation, aquaponics, growing micro greens and so much more.

These are the chickens I would like to raise, and from what it sounds like in Cincinnati we may only be able to raise/keep 10 at a time.

Get those chickens and a hive or two. I no longer have bees, but enjoyed them so very much.

Have you called Mt Healthy Hatchery? I am BRAND NEW too :) I wanted to order my chicks by mail, but to get the breeds we wanted we would have to wait until October for delivery. I called MHH and I was able to pick up a minimum order of 6 (but the accidentally gave a 7th chicken to us!) We have them brooding in the basement now, and coop construction begins tomorrow. I have never been a pet person, but I fell in love with the idea of chickens and had to have them right away. The local pickup was great because it allowed me to have them sooner, and the chicks were less stressed out. The hatchery doesn't have every breed available at every minute, so we had to change some of our choices to get them sooner rather than later. They are all sweethearts, but most especially the Golden Comet, Ginny. We have 2 SL Wyandottes, 1 GL Wyandotte, a mystery chick that I think is a Splash Cochin, 1 Barred Plymouth Rock, and 1 Golden Comet. My kids gave them all names from Harry Potter! Good luck :)

Awe :) That all sounds great!

Wish I could say the same, but the opportunity for us to move and get the house we were looking at has basically stopped. So we will not be able to raise chickens anytime soon.

Bummer, I hope that things change for you soon! If it helps, we live in the city, and don't have a lot of space, but it still works...Update when you can :)

Thats too bad, You should move to alaska...

Whats that about protesting? protesting what?

I've been involved for years protesting BIG Corporate style government and government corporatism, via Libertarian Party voting as well as recently Occupy Movement. In addition, I really respect the Free State Project up in NH. :)
I'm for the people, their right to choose without deceitful influence via government games and media ploys.
