Just started using the forum but have visited the website a few times in the last months.

I am in Donegal in north west Ireland. I started with my first three hens just 3 months ago - a barred rock, bluebell and white star.

I built the coop myself based on a boughton design - we call it Boughton Abbey.

The chickens took very easily to the coop and started laying pretty quickly too. So far it has all been very low maintenance. They are all great layers and I use the eggs mostly for the breakfasts I cook our B&B guests. The chickens free range all day long. The only problem is, here in Donegal, during the summer, the sun hardly sets and so I'm having to stay up later and later currently until they finally decide to roost! At the moment it usually isn't before 11.30pm.

Well, I'm looking forward to reading through the threads and hearing all your stories.

Good luck.

It is often not difficult to train birds to come into their coop for treats when you are ready to close them up - shake a can of grain to call them, and give some to them only when they go inside.
