Hi, my name is Jessica and I just purchase 3 little chicks (5-8 wks old). I have one Buff Orpington, one Barred Rock and one Rhode Island Red. I did browse the forum and found helpful information. But I am totally new to the chicken world and many words have been abbreviated.

We will be building a coop for our little ones and hopefully it will be done in a week or two (love the coop examples you guys have).

I would like to know what must items in general I should have. Any advise for beginners will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Jessica!

Welcome to the forum! As for what you need, assuming you have the waterer, feed, heat source until they feather out, and bedding, there really isn't much more you need. If they're girls, you'll eventually need a nest box with nesting material. Oh, and a roost. They love to be up high as long as they have a safe way up and down. Treats will make them happy! There are a couple of threads here (do a search) for other things that are nice to have such as first aid stuff. Have fun and let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you for the nice welcome. Their wings do have nice feathers do I still need to have them under a lamp or heather? I have a small heather for my dogs I can use. Their inside my room right now in a big birds cage and I keep my temperature at 73-75 degrees. The coop should be done next week I hope.

I am feeding them Purina Start Grow is that a good supplement for them? Is any brand ok as long as they have the require ingredients. I live where theirs not many people raising chickens so I might need to order the food. I will be having them as pets after they stop laying eggs. So I want them to be very healthy.

No roosters here or my neighbor will have a heart attack. I will check about the nest box materials, thanks.
