Hi, I have been learning so much valuable information about chickens and chicken care from this site I decided to join. I picked up 13 adorable black jersey giant chicks 19 weeks ago, they are 21 weeks old now. They are much bigger now. They have been a wonderful learning opportunity.

I decided to join the group because I picked up 2, 15 month old hens 3 weeks ago and one died this afternoon. I just want to protect my 13 giants and should have listened more intently about the precautions. She was still under quarantine but I still have her sister and don't know what to do now. I started a thread in the emergency forum too. I just hope I have not put my flock in danger. These two newer hens were supposed to be my live incubators so I can breed jersey giants.

Thanks for having this site here! It is a great resource. It has been so helpful and informative already.

Thanks!

Welcome to BYC!

I'm sorry to hear you lost one of your girls today, I don't think that's something most ever get used to. That was a good idea posting over on the emergency thread, hope you get your answers there.

Good luck with your chickens, I hope they provide you with years of enjoyment!

Did she exhibit any symptoms, change of behavior before she died? It's not unusual for chickens to die of no apparent reason. Some just do. Were you having a HOT spell?

No unusual behaviors, her friendly, happy to eat anything self. Yes, today got well into the 90's very humid. The other 14 chickens are panting. I added cool water. She had very thick feathers and feathers down her legs. Maybe she was too hot?

This is what i posted in the emergency forum. It is the rest of the story:

I have 13, 21 week old black jersey giants. I acquired two 15 month old barnyard mix chickens that I hoped to use to incubate eggs for the giants. They have been at my place in a small coop/run for 3 weeks kept away from the giants. I let the new 2 free range under supervision for a couple hours yesterday. While they were out with me I cleaned the poop but of one of them, with some fresh water. She seemed fine yesterday and was her normal friendly self. I was concerned she had a pretty bare butt. I did some research and decided the other chicken was not plucking but she might have a yiest infection. So, I checked on her this morning before church and then picked up some providone. When I got home she was dead. No blood. Just wondering if there are any thoughts about whether the possible yiest infection is what killed her? What should I do about the other chicken? Should I quarantine for just one more week or for 4 more weeks or not risk introducing at all? I have read don't introduce 1 new chicken to a flock, your thoughts on this? I am new to chickens and am sick about this loss. How do I know if the other one is sick too? Should I take her to a vet before introducing her to my flock?

Thank you in advance for your help and any suggestions!
