Hi! My name is Sheila and I just joined BYC. I have been a "Backyard Chicken" mum for almost a year now. I started out with Wilbert (my avatar picture), Stella and Gertrude. We recently added Lucy and Ethel to the clan. Me, along with my husband, are learning as much as we can to give them the best and most healthy life ever. Along with the chickens I have 4 dogs (Bailey, Charlie, Sassy and Rufus), 3 cats (Ashley, Klondike and Reily) and 2 out door cats that strictly use me for food (Molly and Creepy). I am very excited to be a part of BYC and know that I have somewhere to turn when I have no clue.... which has been often. This is my first shot with chickens. So far I love it! I'm just scared that I'm not doing something right so forgive me if I ask a ton of questions.
Thank you again for such a great resource and I look forward to interacting with each of you.

Willbert is very pretty. Is he a buff orpington? They are my favorite breed! I love their personalties.

I remember being scared the first time I started keeping chickens. But no worries, I'm sure you're doing fine!
 
Thank you! I honestly have no idea what breed Wilbert is. Wilbert was a rescue from an awful situation. I don't know how old he is or anything. He sort of adopted us. He was originally dropped off down the road at my neighbors. He kept coming to our house. They kept coming to get him and he would just keep coming back. So finally we asked if we could just keep him. They were willing being they had 4 other roosters dropped off at the same time as Wilbert. So I always say he adopted us. When we received him he had an orange blinder on his beak. They said he was aggressive without it on. He somehow got it off and he is just the sweetest and wonderful rooster ever. I can pick him up and walk with him. We recently fought an infection in his leg and I had to give him a shot every day.... no problem he took it like a man.... er.. hm.... a brave rooster! So if you can tell what breed he is I'm more than willing to take your word for it. I honestly have no idea. :) Lucy and Ethel just arrived yesterday. We are having issued with Stella pecking Lucy. I know the whole pecking order thing but I hate to see them fight. All of my hens came with their beaks clipped. The farm I bought them from does that automatically. Not thrilled about it but that's what they do. The good thing is they can't seem to do a whole bunch of damage in their fights because of it.

I have a TON to learn. I've been reading and studying for the last year but they always find a way to surprise me. I'm really excited to be here and learn from everyone!

Nice to meet you Sheila, Welcome to Backyard chickens. Sounds like the roo was wearing pinless peepers. Those are usually used to prevent feather plucking, it prevents from seeing straight ahead - so their aim is off.
 
BTW your avatar photo is too small to get a good look at him. You may like to post better photos at "what breed or gender is this." to see if someone recognizes his breed or mix.
