Hello Gail;

I am a newbie too. I am intending to start a small flock this spring as well. The climate here can be challenging, we are zone 2b - 3. We outside of town and are not limited to a specific number of birds. I have 3 active households to supply. I would be glad of advice on breeds and size of flock. Perhaps 8 - 10 Sussex?

We have 2 Speckled Sussex in our mixed flock and I love their sweet dispositions, plus they are very pretty. If you want plenty of eggs to supply the 3 households, you might want to check into Black Australorps or sex link chickens (the red or the black)...those all are great egg layers.

Nice to have you here!

We are not allowed to have roosters but I can understand why. Most of us are in subdivisions and roosters could be annoying to non chicken lovers.
