Another chicken guy checking in! We have had our hens (New Hampshire Reds) for about a year now. We love them as they are very sweet and very productive layers. doing some research on other breeds and figured I would introduce myself on here to get tips from other owners. I love this site as there is a ton of information and I love learning more and more about these great animals!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Based on your comments about your New Hampshires, you might also like breeds that are good layers with a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (good lap pets) such as Australorps, Faverolles, Orpingtons, Sussex, and Brahmas. Of course there can always be an exception with any breed. If high egg production is priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Hi and welcome to BYC. As Yorkshire coop says, Michael has given you some good advice. I'd suggest getting a variety of breeds in the first instance as you will then be able to make an informed decision about which you prefer. Your state thread (type your state in the search box) may be useful, not only in terms of meeting BYC members local to you, but also getting the inside scoop on what breeds thrive in your area and where to get them.

    Wishing you all the best
