Hi All,

New to keeping chickens and new to BYC.

We have 15 pullets (or at least we think they're all pullets). They're 13 weeks old. We got them from a well-known hatchery at a couple days old and transitioned them to their permanent coop at 4 weeks. We free-range them when we're home so that we can keep an eye out as we live on a rural acreage.

We've only lost one chick, and that was in the first week. The rest seem to be getting fat and sassy. In addition to non-medicated chick feed and scratch, we fed them a fair amount of veggies from our garden this summer. Now that it's getting cooler, we're catching loads of late-season grasshoppers to hand feed.

So far this has been great fun. Looking forward to learning loads from the forum.

Hi there, RPClark, and welcome to Backyard chickens! The learning center is a great place to check out with loads of helpful info. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. If you want to be sure you have all pullets and no roosters, you can post them in this thread, https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this. And you might like to check in at the Iowa page, for local chicken chat! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/182/ia-here. Have fun and I hope you enjoy BYC as much as I have!
