Hello everyone, I live in the central Yukon which is in northern Canada. I currently have 4 hens and a rooster that is being re-homed because I live in a town that does not allow roosters. My hens are Production Red types and were hatched April 10, 2017. These are my first chickens. Where I live allows up to 12 hens so I hope to get more hens soon.

I also love to garden, spin yarn, dye with plants, make soap, and read. I have 3 kids and numerous other pets. Where I live gets really cold and I do not get real darkness in the summer. I also live 4 hours from a supermarket ( 8 hours round trip in the summer and up to 12 in the winter) which is also where the closest feed store is. We have a small general store locally. The closest vet is also that far away.

I hope to learn a lot on here.

Hi and welcome! You have some fun hobbies! Do your chickens help you garden? :highfive: (mine do).
Since you live so far from, well, everything, hopefully the information contained in the forums will be helpful for you and your chickens. I have found the BYC forums invaluable for healthcare ideas and problem solving.

So far they have helped by eating the weeds. My oldest son and I are hoping to build a portable coop that I can put over my beds. Where I live is a short growing season (60 days) so I can use all the help I can maintaining my beds. I am hoping the manure helps because my soil is rather poor here.

Hello & Welcome! BYC is a wealth of info. Since you are Sooo far from a feed store you might be interested in the section on feeding/watering etc. CLick on forums above, and you will see a list of topics. Maybe these ideas will help with the winter months up north :)

I will check those sections out. There are a couple of other hen owners in town and in general we can go onto Facebook and ask if anyone is going in and can pick up things for each other. My boyfriend is diabetic so he goes in on a regular basis to pick up his insulin. I probably will stock up for the winter though. I need to get them winter treats too because it gets to -40s and even -50 C in the winter. I bought one of those digital thermometers that are wireless. I am sure I will be checking it like a baby monitor until I figure out how my set-up is working.
