I'm Nicole, and am thrilled to have found this site. I have actually been "stalking" for quite a while before I joined.
We are a new chicken family, (and I say family because my youngest son who is 12, has taken on the role of chicken whisperer).
I have wanted chickens for years now. I won't eat factory farmed eggs or meat for ethical reasons. So I finally figured that if the HOA gets itchy about my chickens, it might be better to ask forgiveness than permission. I am already collecting egg cartons from my neighbors promising fresh eggs in exchange for happy neighbors!
We live in the Huston TX area and boy is it hot!!!! I was worried about my girls, but they seem to be doing ok.
I am learning that chickens are not very smart!!! :hmm I actually have to dunk my Orpington's beaks in the water so they can find it!! Luckily Betty, my Plymouth Rock seems slightly more intelligent.

Anyway!
Greetings from TX!

Hi :welcome Nicole

Glad you could join us here! It sure does sound like you are enjoying your new chicken adventures! It's great to read the whole family is taking part too, it really is a hobby everyone can enjoy. I see your thinking on keeping the neighbours happy ;) I used to do that too!

Good luck for the future and enjoy your time here on BYC :frow

Hey Nicole, Welcome! I live in Texas too and have pans, big rubber ones, that i put a cement stepping block (the kind that soaks up water) and fill the pan up to the top of the block. Actually the pans are big enough to hold two blocks. My chickens love to sit on the wet cool blocks (I put them under the shade of trees). Every once in a while I go throw used water bottles that i have frozen into the pans so the water is nice and cold.
