Hi everyone!
My name is Bianca. Obviously I just joined, so I thought I would post here first to introduce myself. I'm 24, married, live in Adelaide, South Australia. I currently don't have chickens, but we are starting to build a coop in our backyard suitable for 4 chooks. We plan on getting rescues. Neither of us eat eggs, but we do know people who do so if they do lay then the eggs will go to use, just not by us. I found the template provided by the forum so if you want to know a bit more, I have filled it in below.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm semi-new. I have never owned them but have some experience caring for them through volunteering at an animal shelter. My husband has lots of experience owing chooks and has since he was a teen. We currently do have Japanese quails, which started out as a couple of rescues when someone dumped a couple where my husband used to work. We got the original quails over 5 years ago - sadly they have since passed away, but we have adopted more since.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
0, but we have 4 Japanese quails.
(3) What breeds do you have?
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I came across it when googling for DIY coop ideas
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I have a lot of hobbies! I love reading, writing, embroidery, gardening, astronomy, being active, horse riding..
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a husband, but no children. We plan to in the future, when we have our careers sorted out (I will be a qualified teacher next year). My husband has just started studying a Disability carers course. We have lots of pets! I'll list them below::
-4 horses
-1 dog
-2 cats (well, one is my mum's)
-cockatiel
-galah
-aviary with the quails, and budgies
-2 aquariums
-snake
-4 bonded rabbits
-turtle
Most of these animals are rescues.
Anyway, regarding chickens. Husband has wanted to get some again for a long time - he just loves chickens! I have always wanted a few myself. Recently we chopped down a decent sized tree which took up a LOT of our backyard. Now I have been able to fence off some of that area for a veggie patch. But there is still enough space under the other still existing tree to build a coop and fenced run, and the chickens can be free range in the backyard during the day when we are home. I have been collecting fencing materials for a while, so now we are nearly ready to build!
I look forward to meeting you all!
