(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Hatched my first 10 Auburn Javas April 2017 (6 were roosters)
Then got 3 Silkie chicks - turned out to be a trio
Then trio of adult Lavender Orpingtons
Just got another 16 chicks last week
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Sent 5 roosters (4 Javas and the Orpington) to freezer camp, gave the 2 live Orpington hens to the fellow that helped me.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Adults
3 Silkies
1 Toulouse goose
5 Auburn Javas
New chicks
4 Lavender Easter Eggers
12 Brown Leghorns
I’m raising and trying to help bring back from extinction the Auburn Java. The Java is the second oldest American breed, Dominique is the oldest.
According to the Livestock Conservancy the Java has move up from Threatened to Watch. But those are the Black and Mottled. The Auburn was mentioned in old poultry literature but has long been extinct. Until the Garfield Farm Museum became involved in restoring the Black Java. They were hatching hundreds and the Auburn coloring occasionally appeared.
Mr Lyle Behl initially took on the task of restoring the Auburn. Others have since joined him.
I got the Silkies to brood Javas and the others for eggs (specifically for egg colors other than the Javas so I can tell who the momma is!). Only keeping Java roos. One as breeder, second as back up.
I’ll be setting up my Javas for breeding in earnest as soon as I’m sure the weather is holding.

I’m a partly retired home health nurses
I live on just over 2 acres of heavily wooded very steep terrain in the mountains and am trying to slowly transition to a homesteading/more self sufficient life style, partly for ethical reasons and partly because my SS check does not cover the bills.

As for the homestead and becoming more self sufficient, I'm sure you know quite a few here in the same boat. Hope you'll share some pics when the time comes.
