Im not really good at introduction but I will do my best. We've had chickens for about a year now. We started with 4 Barred Rock hens from a weekly farmers auction. They have been awesome but we are a family of 5 and my youngest will eat 4 eggs in a sitting so we expanded by adding what we thought were more Barred Rock chicks, they turned out to be Dominiques and some olive eggers (Wyandotte/EE). Over the winter we lost most of them to a neighbors cat. That is a long dramatic story I won't get into right now but rest assured said cat no longer sets paw on my property. Anyhow, this spring we headed back to auction and we're shocked to see AMERAUCANAS!! I am boarder line obsessed with blue eggs so we absolutely had to have them, even though one is a rooster and I wasn't supposed to get a rooster (per my SO not ordinance regulations). We got him and his hen. There was another hen but there was a young man willing to pay way more than I would have so I let it go. So now what was supposed to be 4 laying hens has become 7 and a rooster, plus an incubator full of eggs. I'm pretty good at math btw. Chickens have also opened the door for rabbits, which lead to 4-H and that's now evolving into a full on homestead thanks to our local extension offices monthly news letter. Im a stay at home parent of a 7 year old daughter, 6 year old son, and 3 year old daughter. We live in outside a small town in Western Ny on a little under 2 acres that my SO grew up on. Aside from our little farm we also have three dogs, and might end up with a 4th. Right now we are small and learn but someday we hope to make a difference in our community. By nature I'm pretty frugal so in my quest for sustainability I have made it a point to use as many upcycled materials as possible. The less I spend on each build the more I build to house them and keep, especially now that I have the green light to hatch as many chicks as I want. Although I think I messed up this first batch so I will probably be asking some questions. So yeah I think that about covers the questions. If I missed anything feel free to ask.
