Hello

Howdy, welcome to the coop.

Congrats on the farm purchase, gonna be lots of work though. Even a minimally functioning farm is a full-time commitment.

Here's a quick summary of how to determine what breed to get:

  1. Determine what is your main want from a chicken? Eggs, Meat, companionship etc.
  2. Select a breed that closest matches your requirements.
  3. Select a coloring of your choice from your breed if applicable.

As far as chicken breeds are concerned, you'll first need to know what is your main purpose for wanting chickens? Companionship, eggs, meat etc. After you determine that then it will make it easier to narrow down what breed will be closest (or exactly) what you're expecting from a chicken. Once you pick a breed you can select the coloring (multiple breeds have different colors). And then you're all set. The basic requirements of chickens don't vary from breed to breed, but handling may. You'll be able to determine how to handle your breed once you select one.
