My name is Cara and I'm a homemaker, a mother of 3 children, 1 turtle and most recently a hen/rooster (not sure yet), an avid Gardner, lover of nature and working towards becoming a CA and holistic healing teacher. I've never owned or even thought about getting a chicken aside from the deformed baby I saved from our school hatchery when I was around 10 years old (his name was Fred and I couldn't bare to see him killed so I took him home and cared for him until he passed away a few weeks later). We aquired our current feathered friend when he/she escaped the chicken farm next door (they were killing all the baby chicks) and we decided that since Peckster made it out and basically adopted us that we'd keep and raise her.
I never knew just how loyal and loving a chicken could actually be until now and I'm trying to learn all I can to make sure our Peckster lives a long and happy life :)

Hi Cara! You sound like a sweet and wonderful person who will fit right in here.

Welcome to BYC! It is a great place and you will learn EVERYTHING you need to know about chickens (and more!) here.

Your Peckster is very lucky to have found you, for sure! Now you need to do two things:

1.) Post pictures! That will be very helpful for the more seasoned chicken people to help you determine breed and sex;

and

2.) Work on getting Peckster a friend (or two, or 12. You will soon learn, chickens are more addicting than opioids, and you will NEED more, as that sick,itchy craving starts infecting you). The reason for this is: Chickens are flock animals, and as much as s/he will come to love you, s/he will need the companionship of another chicken, to learn how to be her best and most expressive inner chicken, lol!

Like the Kikster said, work on the secure coop/run situation, if you don't already have one.

And ask alot of questions! That's how we all learned. :):wee :welcome :wee :pop
