Hi!

My name is Dawn and my awesome chicken-loving cousin referred me to this site. I'm getting back into chickens, with a coop this time. Previously I had acreage with some free-range chickens left behind by the previous owners (bc they were wild and crazy, but they became pretty tame in the end). The chickens roamed the pasture by day and roosted in the barn at night and used the hay storage area as their nesting box, so I didn't really have an intensive coop situation. For now I'm living in town (I SO want to get back to acreage!) with a large yard (for in town anyway) and getting into backyarding chickens. A small coop and an existing flock of 6 (4 buff orpingtons and 2 jersey giants) will be mine next weekend so I'm getting things ready this week with hardware cloth, netting over the top, predator-proofing in general. Since I have a 4 yo son I've had to tame my own ideas of what I wanted for now and go the easier route. :) I'm hoping to add another small coop and double my flock to at least 12 for next Spring/Summer. It's so difficult to take it easy and wait!

My background is 20 years as a vet tech, college was pre-vet, my own acreage with horses, raising goats, chickens & ducks, livestock guardian dogs - so animals have been my life. I'm really looking forward to getting a bit of farm girl life back. A nice veggie patch is next. And someday the inside of my house will be as nice as I want to make my outside life and chicken coop. :)
