Hello there!
My name is Shay at Essential Roots Farm in Southern Maine! I have so any questions and love to learn! Both my husband and I are students of Joel Salaatin and Justin Rhodes. We are slowly working towards our big goal of at least 75% self sustainability on our 10 acre plot of heaven.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
No. We have had chickens for about 3 years now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
14 hens and 2 ROOS
(3) What breeds do you have?
Rhode Island red, black astralorp, Easter Eggers and Americana
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The eggs for sure and the personality that the chickens add to the homestead.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, and reading. Also working closely with our church and state legislature to expand care and support resources for foster and adoptive families.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 2 great Danes that act more like guardian livestock dogs , two indoor cats, and one fish. We have two beautiful small toddlers and pLans to expand our family through foster/adoption in the near future.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We have known about BYC for about three years now. Since we first got our chickens. It has been a very big help!

Hello Shay and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. Please make yourself at home.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3I’d suggest including your location using the guide in the link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes
