I've been keeping chickens four around a decade, since I was 9 or 10, but have only recently taken it more seriously and have plans to start breeding both chickens and ducks. Next year I hope to set up two breeding flocks, probably Barnevelders and Hamburgs, but I currently only have four chickens: Shirley, a lavender Orpington; Constance, a blue laced red wyandotte; and two mixed bantams, Ginger and Wellington, whose whiskers make me think she's at least half Barbu d'Anvers or d'Uccle. While I get my coop and runs set up for breeding flocks, I'm getting five chicks for the fun of it (and keep the older hens company): a Brahma, a Hamburg, a Houdan, a Sussex, and an Easter egger. In June I'm hatching Cayuga duck eggs. My favorite thing about raising chickens is just getting to know them all as individuals. I love that they all have such distinctive voices and personalities, and going out to visit them and see them all come running when I get home from class or work is my favorite part of the day.
