I'm Natasha, my husband Nate and I are hoping to get into backyard chickens soon---this is something we've been talking about for 12 years and now that we own a house and some land, we can make it a reality!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? New to chickens, but not to birds! We have a 5 year old Budgie and a 10 month old cockatiel.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

No chickens yet, but we've been doing our homework and hope to start this Spring with 3-4.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Still researching!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a HUGE DIY person! I like making and fixing my own stuff. I bake. I read. I do a LOT of fiber crafts (process and scour wool, dye wool, spin wool into yarn, knit, crochet, felt, and I have a loom for when I get the time to learn weaving!). I build 3D printers from scratch and do a lot of tech projects.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm a 6-12 grade teacher, my husband is a mental health clinician (therapist) at my school. We have an 11-year old Husky-mix rescue, Amaguq, 15+ year old rescue calico cat named Sushi, an 8+ year old "Ragdoll" type cat that is also a rescue named Stormageddon: Dark Lord of All---Stormy for short, a 5 year old Budgie named Cecil (he was free on a local town swap FB group), and a 10 month old cockatiel named Carlos. My husband also has a rat and corn snake for his assisted therapy animals at school, Splinter and Kaa.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I've known about BYC for a number of years and lurk the page on and off. Now that we are seriously planning for chickens, I wanted to get more involved and make sure we are prepared.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

I used to keep Cockatiels and Lovebirds, these small parrots sure are fun to keep!

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions along the way about your chicks, coop, or any chicken health issues, be sure and ask. Welcome to our community! :-)

Wow!! Your interests really run the gamut from old-school to high-tech! I bet you are a lot of fun to hang out with! And thanks for rescuing animals that need a second chance; I used to be a hospice house for a dog breed rescue. On Saturday, I actually adopted a young, healthy mixed breed. That's a NEW experience for me. This one is lively enough to play.

Lurking is a good way to learn, but congrats on actually joining. This community is so supportive and willing to share expertise. They will cheer you when things go well and console you when things don't. Welcome to BYC, Natasha!

Let us know what breed or breeds you choose.
