In the Brooder
Hey all!
My name is Moira. I am a veterinary technician that specializes in ER and exotics medicine, so, of course, my favorite patients are chickies!
My husband and I are buying a house at then end of the year(2020) with acreage, and plan to start a ~12 bird flock.
Being in veterinary medicine, research is my jam! If anything, I tend to over prepare.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My grandparents were recently American from Italy, and my family always had a mini-farm. I always ended up being a care giver, but part of that was to help with culling or preparing meat hens. I do not plan on raising my birds for meat, just eggs and companionship.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
-0-
(3) What breeds do you have?
See above. I am still researching breeds and deciding on what mix to have
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love birds, and outdoor birds that I can keep AWAY from my bengals is the best situation for me. I have worked with birds for the last 12 years, and only ever had 1 chicken patient that made me question if they were right for me. In the end, I was the only one in my clinic able to handle her!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love veterinary medicine! My husband runs obstacle course races, so we take weekend trips in the summer, and i love road trips!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Well, I kind of jumped ahead, huh? I work in a clinic that only sees exotics during the day, and sees all but primates at night on er. Our household is just my husband and I, our 4 cats(2 benagls, 2 dsh), and a rotating mix of fosters that come thru my clinic, get nursed back to health, and get adopted out.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have referred clients here for years, heard about it from a coworker
