I'm new to chickens. I just know some very basic things and I have 6 chicks (they are a week and 1 day old) that my husband brought home to me with medicated chick feed. We have a makeshift brooder using a dog crate with chicken wire around it and a red heat lamp.
Anyway, it's nice to meet you all, I'm excited to learn more.

heating pad is best and use hardware cloth not chicken wire on your coop

Welcome. I agree, you need a coop and run ASAP, and heat lamps are dangerous and hard to regulate heat to your chicks. I learned that the hard way.
