In the Brooder
I had chickens in the past. I lost interest when my neighbors dogs killed the last of them. My husband built me a really cool coop before he died (2013). There have been no chickens in it yet. I have finally decided I really want to have chickens again, so my neighbor gave me an incubator he had along with some fresh eggs... Chickens & Turkeys!!!! So, in about 30 days I'm hoping to have some new birds. The last turkeys I had were amazing. My two hens were quite friendly, my tom, well, lets just say he was overly protective of me. My kids LOVED that bird! He would follow them around like a puppy dog and the kids could hug him and pet him and he would just puff right up. Never aggressive with my 2 kids. My husband ended up hating that bird because any time he would come near me and Tom would put himself between us and hiss. If my husband got any closer, Tom would slap him with his wing sometimes leaving bruises. So for his safety (the tom) I had to find him a new pasture to play in. I got to see him often. I took my hens over for "dates" with him.
I have never used this type of incubator before. The one I used in the past was a Hovabator still air. I never had good hatches. One or two eggs out of 12. This one has an egg turner, and it is digital and automatic. I think it was made in China, but my neighbor said it worked well for him (and it didn't cost me anything). I'm having a bit of a struggle setting it up, because the manual isn't too helpful, and it is in Celsius. So far, from what I have researched online, the humidity is too high, and the temp is a bit too low. So I'm trying to figure out how to deal with that.
Well, I don't want to bore anyone so I'll say that is enough of an introduction. I hope I'm welcome here. I really need to have a place to go to relearn poultry. The local feed store used to call me the "bird lady" and would have people call me or stop me when I was there and ask me questions.
