My goodness, I haven't been on a forum like this in a decade, but I decided to join because whenever I have googled questions about my new flock this forum is often one of the first results.

My name is Cat and I live in Maine, hence CatME. I'm not a total Chicken NOOB because I used to have a flock a few years back but I gave them up for various reasons. I started with a couple of Rhode Island Reds, Black Australorps, some Golden Comets from TSC and then I got a lovely Black Australorp Rooster and I eventually had like 32 chickens.

I also have twin girls who will be 13 soon, an 11 year old son, and a bit after we got rid of the flock I got pregnant again. We now have boy/girl twins who will be 3 in August. Yes, 2 sets of twins. It runs in my family. The odds of 2 sets of fraternal twins is about 1/3000. I've been a SAHM for like 12 years and my hands are super full. Not too full for more birdies, though.

I had wanted to get chickens again but this time use a good enclosure and a nice coop. Before I used a modified shed and a useless enclosure. We have a Formex large coop coming in the mail and I have a nice chain link fence enclosure that can be up to 20'x20' if need be. I'm going to put some netting on top so hawks and eagles can't get them. If I find that they need more space I'll get the smaller Formex for overflow. 😁

I was finally able to get my way with getting new chickens because of Covid19 and the fact that it was difficult to get eggs in the store. That convinced my husband- plus seriously I was getting super depressed. Having the chicks has been a great diversion and it gives me something else to think about. I was the chicken enthusiast but my husband wasn't crazy about them free ranging and breeding like crazy. This time I am certain I'll have a handle on it so we can ALL be happy.

So I ordered 10 Hatchery Choice "Rare Breeds" from Hoover's Hatcheries via TSC. 9 arrived alive and all 9 have thrived. They are 3 and 1/2 weeks old or so and so cute. I'll post a thread with photos in the chick identification forum so anyone who wants to can help me figure out exactly what I have. I have some ideas.

I know about how to care for chickens and what they need but I don't have a ton of knowledge about breeds.

Thanks for reading all this!!!

I hope you're all well and happy right now! ❤
