Hello! My name is Mrs. G and we live in a 1st ring suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. My husband and I have twin daughters, 3 cats (actually 2 cats and 1 that is 90% dog), and a dog (who is 90% cat). I am a teacher at the elementary level. Right now, I am serving as our district's science coordinator.

With distance learning in place, I took on our Kindergarten chick egg incubation and hatching project. Our family got 2 dozen eggs from a local supplier, and had 8 hatch. One died after being splay legged and having a neck issue :( , and have talked for years about getting chickens, so this opportunity to raise them from egg became the push we needed. So for now, we have 7 chicks. They are now getting old enough to recognize my voice and crowd around my hand in the brooder box to peck at my finger nails and bracelets while they get chest pets. We are going to keep 3 or 4, and the remaining ones will go to another teacher who is rebuilding a flock. We aren't sure what breeds we have, or even what genders, but we are pretty sure we have 6 females and 1 male. IF Hurley, the one we think is a male is actually so, he will go to a friend's farm to rule the roost of a big flock of VERY spoiled ladies.

I found Back Yard Chickens in my research about best practices in incubation and brooder/coop design and you have all been VERY helpful. I joined now to figure out what breeds our flock contain. Based on photos, we think we have a majority of Black Australorps, possibly Jersey Giants, but there are 2 that are a mystery. Thanks for this community! You all are very helpful!
