Thank you all for your response and I checked the bag of shavings I have and it does say untreated and I really don't know if its ceader or not it was just a guess and i just thought I may have herd other people call it that. But I think it is what your telling me to buy Its a big white compressed Square of wood shavings, and it was about 7 bucks and it was what the people at the feed store told me to buy.
Thank you for your response and Thank you for telling me exactly what grit is I will be buying a bag right away and will make sure its age appropriate, but I appreciate you mentioning the food they have may work somewhat, because it does seem gritty to me. And so I checked the bag of bedding I have and It is wood shavings and it does say untreated but thats all the info basically and the brand Mallard Creek. And so I just really didn't know if it was ceader this was just a guess I thought I may have herd someone call it that. But I think it is what your telling me to buy. Its a big white compressed Square of wood shavings, and it was about 7 bucks and it was what the people at the feed store told me to buy. And yea I'm not sure if it was wood because they chew on it all the time and are always fine and they do this even though they have food down 24/7 they seem to just nibble on anything at alltimes haha! And I'm sorry to hear about the heat there im sure thats tough and especially with the humidity! I'm about 20 miles south of Las Vegas so it is definitely hot here too, but atleast its dry!... Cool to here about the efforts building the chicken coop I'm also waiting on more meterials to build my ducks a little house when they grow up right now they go outside about 3 times a day for 30-45mins to start acclimating them tho there in there little baby pool almost the whole time staying ccoolAnd yes it was definitely in the upper right part of hBut at about 6 weeks or so I'm hoping to have them mainly outside as well. I guess it will take my ducks around 20 weeks to fully develope tho. How long will it take your chickens to mature? Again thank you for the feed back!Grit is finely ground stone usually made up of granite that is different sizes for the diffferent ages of the birds. Chick grit is what I buy from the feed stores, on Amazon, or Tractor Supply Company. The grit should be placed in a separate dish and the bird instinctively knows when to take it and when it needs it. The smallest chicks know this. If they are only eating the starter grower crumbles usually they don’t even need it as far as chickens are concerned until they are given any other food or treat. I am no resource on ducks. As to your cedar shavings I would like to make a few comments that are constructive criticism. You need to be sure they are untreated cedar shavings for sure. Personally I would not use cedar at all. Chances that it’s untreated are low. You need to go to the feed store and get a $5 bag of untreated wood shavings. It’s okay if they peck and chew on them some. If you are providing adequate feed then they will be full enough not to want to chow down on the wood. My chickens scoot all of mine out of their pen right now and it irritates the stew out of me but they will be in their outside permanent run and coop soon which we are building. We have been waiting on a metal delivery which has been delayed. It is so hot here in MS. We have had them outside on our screened in porch for awhile but I had to put them in our basement where it’s cool. It’s just too hot for them without a coop. I can’t cool them down enough without space to work and a sprinkler or mister running and a fan going. They need a place to dust bathe if they are going to be outside for long and it’s just so hot here they were miserable. The flies are awful!!!! Well I wish you luck and feel free to message me anytime for help. I’m no expert but I know a good bit about medicine, vet stuff, and animals. I’ve had a bunch and I worked in medicine a long time.
Sincerely,
Pam
AAre you sure this bulge was in her neck or down below at the base? When they eat their crop will fill up and can stay that way for quite a while. It does sound like their was an obstruction though.
Hello thank you and yes it was definitely in the upper right hand part of her neck it wasn't the little lump at the base of their necks I looked this up too. And I have now noticed when ever they eat the crop gets a little swoolen or filled up but goes away shortly after there done eating. Something i believe was definetly in there but it is now gone and she has been very chipper all day thankfully. Are you sure this bulge was in her neck or down below at the base? When they eat their crop will fill up and can stay that way for quite a while. It does sound like their was an obstruction though.
