Hello! I'm Sarah from South Carolina.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens, my husband had some growing up. We received our first batch in June, and our second batch in July.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 19 total.

(3) What breeds do you have?
We have 4 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 5 Rhode Island Reds, and 10 Buff Orpingtons.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love the learning experience it has been. We had a chick come in sick, and learning how to try to care for her was an experience. Unfortunately she didn't make it, so
that was another thing to work through with our children. My husband and I built our coop. It was hard work, but we are super proud. It may not be pretty, but our chickens are living well. Our kids love watching them and interacting with them. We are all looking forward to the eggs!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We are diving into the world of homesteading. We've tried a garden a few times, but this year, it's became a real project, love experimenting. We enjoy reading,
playing outside.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband is the sole provider for our family. We've started chickens and gardening as a way to help relieve some pressure. We plan on expanding into other animals too if possible. We hope to move to a much larger property in the next few years.
I'm a stay at home, homeschooling Mama to 5 littles. Ages almost 1 to 9 years old. 4 out of 5 births were home births, and my last was 11 lbs and 5 oz!
My husband and I moved to the south from Maine about 13 years ago!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I stumbled across BYC when I was doing research on chickens before getting them. I noticed that a lot of the sources I was pulling up were from here!
I love that there is tons of information, and forums so people can ask for guidance for their specific situations.
