Hello!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Like good millennials, my husband and I got chickens during the lockdown! Our 2-acre property already had a large coop, but we just hadn't had the time to rehabilitate it until life got a bit simpler. I am new to chickens, but my husband grew up raising 150 a summer on his family's acreage. I have to admit I got them to humor him and didn't think I would be that interested, but I have really come to love my birds! I find watching chickens strangely like watching a fire - I could sit and do it forever. I guess it really must tap into something primal!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
15.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Buff Orpington, Silver Wyandotte, Australorp, Ameraucana, Barred Rock, Shamo, Brown Leghorn

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love hearing the rooster crow in the morning and I love watching their hilarious group dynamics! I also love being part of a history that is so strong that even the word "tradition" doesn't do it justice.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Cooking, gardening, playing board games, singing in choirs.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I are both teachers, and we have two young daughters. We have a small acreage in an un-gentrified neighborhood smack in the middle of a metro area of 8 million. We love our weird little backwater!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found it while trying to get Google to help me out regarding whether a few of our mystery birds are cockerels or pullets!
