Hey there! I’m from So Cal and looking to start a chicken family hopefully by next spring (since I missed the hatchlings this year). We don’t have too big of a back yard, but plenty of herbs, veggies and flowers, grass, bugs, and fun places to play in. We want to build a coop since I keep reading the store bought ones are pricey but made cheaply. Any ideas you have for a smaller, but a walk-in coop would be awesome. We also have predators, so we want to build a coop safe from rats, gophers, raccoons, possums, coyotes, and hawks. Yikes, I know.
Also, what breeds are good egg layers? Our city caps chickens as 1/per person, so at the most, we’d only have maybe 3 or 4. I’m going to wrangle in the whole fam to help raise them.
I’m super excited to be here and hope there are other So Cal folks online to let me know any tips/suggestions for raising chicks in the city.
Thanks for your help and suggestions!
