After lurking for months, I finally decided to join!
I got my first chickens in May 2020. They were day old Cream Legbars and Swedish Flower Hens. The following September we brooded a batch of Sapphire Gems. Our flock of 11 is all laying, and we're moving soon to a place where we can have a proper homestead.
My grandmother, who spent her childhood on a farm and grew up to have an urban homestead of her own, first introduced me to the magic of chickens. She always seemed to to have fuzzy chicks. When I was in college, my parents decided to keep a flock of Buff Orpingtons.
I always wanted chickens of my own but it took the egg (and everything else) shortage of covid for us to take the plunge. Homesteading had always been a dream but it suddenly became a priority...fast forward to February 2021 and we're under contract to purchase a half acre "in-town" homestead in a farm community 30 minutes away from my husband's job.
We're looking forward to being more food independent and chickens - lots of chickens.
