Hi chicken lovers! I’ve had my nine girls for one year, we are celebrating their birthday! I have 4 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Plymouth Rocks and 2 Buffs. Our 3rd Buff died as a chick😔. At the moment, the Plymouth Rocks are my favorite. They are good layers and have a nice temperament. The Rhode Island Reds are aggressive and the Buffs are

between. Each one has a very distinct personality. We have no rooster. They are producing so many eggs that we are giving them away!

I plan to expand their chicken run; I have a portable coop and move it around for them to enjoy the grass and bugs. Living in the north east, we had a banner snow year last winter and the girls did great! No problems with the coop whatsoever including predators, warmth, or dampness. We live in the country and have lots of hawks, coyotes, weasels and more. 😳

Right now I am planning a “chicken check-up” and creating a first aid station. I’m also exploring how to naturally deter lice, etc, and keep the coop fresh in upcoming summer heat. Quite frankly, the girls were supposed to be my husband’s project but they turned into mine, at least for the moment. We have both been highly entertained and also enjoy the benefits of fresh eggs.

I learned about backyard chickens while researching various things about their care. I also thought it would be fun to be part of the chicken community.
