Good day, evening, morning,

We bought a house in October and it has a good 1.8 acres for my garden dogs and I’d love to get chickens for eggs! My husband gave me the go ahead to start but I want to know how the be the best chicken momma and to make sure they will be happy layers and maybe dinner( not sure I will be able to do this! But I’m aiming for food security with the land we have). Happy days!!

Congrats on your property and your plans for raising chickens. No eggs taste better than the ones from your own girls!

There are a lot of good layer breeds out there, and so have fun figuring out what you want. I tend to go with big, heavy heritage breeds that aren't particularly good at flying (that is, escaping) and that do well in extreme weather.
